Controllers Comments

PiIlar was never going to be the most technical of areas, it simply lacks the contour detail and varied point features. In order to get any form of courses at the area , you need to use the rootstocks and knolls. The problem then becomes where do you draw the line between those that you map and those you don't. I believe that Brian got the level right and produced courses which made best use of the area. The area is so fast that the best route was invariably straight, visibility was so good that it meant control hanging was difficult. A few people commented that the controls were hung too high. However this was not the case, generally the bottom of the kite was about one foot off the ground. The problem was more one of the visibility being too good! HALO and the organisers Mike and Dorothy Smith can feel proud that with relatively few helpers they put on an event which as far as I am aware had no organisational problems on the day. On a final note, if you didn't get your fastest mins/km time today then what were you doing out there!

Stephen Kimberley

Planner’s comments.

Pillar is fast all year round; the nettles slow us a little in summer. Some areas are very brambly and I planned courses to avoid the need to go through those areas. The central field, left fallow, allowed opportunities for long leg route choices. From the feedback I received, it appears that challenges were presented. The ‘rootstock’, which was prominent in most post race analyses, is an essential feature of the area. It enables point feature planning. The dilemma, however, is ‘which ones to map’?

I was appreciative of the guidance given by controller, Stephen Kimberley. He ensured a fair competition and worked effectively to produce an enjoyable day. Two timing boxes did not start up on the morning of the event, after being programmed on Saturday. Steve’s policy of checking them before they were located in the wood was proved to be sound; we were able to programme two spares and avoid voiding any courses. Steve’s OCAD knowledge and experience with SI was vital for the smooth running of the event. Thank you Steve.

A suggestion was made that we should hold the British Relay Champs in the wood! Were we to have ‘start’ at the bottom end of the wood, a lovely downhill finish could be arranged. If it is any consolation to competitors, I did have the same ’drag’ to contend with as you, on my bike, each time I returned to Pelham’s Pillar from a day’s work in the forest. Don’t let the uphill finish put you off a return visit. See you again!?

CLARO

Just a quick word of thanks for a smashing event - despite our glorious failure to scor a significant number of points there was general feeling that the event was produced to avery high standard. For many of our runners (including me) it wsa the fastest they had run for years! Please pass on our thanks to all concerned.

WALTON CHASERS

Many thanks for the final, please pass on Chasers thanks for a job well done to all officials and helpers involved.

SOC

" We have just returned from the final and although not technically challenging, it was very exciting and a really great and enjoyable occasion"
AIRE
Thanks for a great event. Wasn't it fast and furious!!

Thanks for an excellent event.

The area lived up to my distant memory of it. It would be a great venue for a major relay.

FVO

Mike, thank you for an excellently organised event - really enjoyed it (and not just because we won!). I also imagine that your food traders were very glad you had asked them along - they seemed to do a roaring trade

SBOC

Please pass on our thanks to all in Halo who arranged the day, it all went very well...except the results from our viewpoint

SARUM

Thanks very much for the event, all Sarum members enjoyed themselves

SOUTHDOWNS

Just a quick note of thanks to yourselves and the rest of HALO for organising the CSC Final yesterday. In particular your efficient and sympathetic responses to my late requests for changes in our team certainly
helped make the event an enjoyable experience for us.
NOC

I am writing on behalf of NOC to thank you and all the other members of HALO for organising such a splendid Compass Sport Cup Final today. A warm welcome at the gate, colourful banners, efficient parking, accurately placed controls and a fast results service were all testament to the tremendous effort and care you had taken to make this event special. Although we did not win all our members enjoyed running around such a beautiful, runnable area.

Compass Sport Pillar Woods, Caistor, was the scene of the final, played out in drizzly weather under Pelham's Pillar, thanks to Halo and their excellent organisation. Courses zig zagged across the beech forests and grass land, where fast running brought results and too fast running brought mistakes.
