NIGHT ORIENTEERING EVENT ( YHOA NIGHT LEAGUE )

NORMANBY HALL COUNTRY PARK

Saturday 9 December 2000

Planner’s Comments

My first attempt at planning a colour coded event was made very easy thanks to the help of Dorothy, as Controller and I’d certainly have another go (should anyone want me to, of course).

There is something very peaceful about being out on a course early in the morning as the sun rises checking Control Sites with only deer and squirrels for company.  There seems to be so much time to do everything before the competitors arrive and then all of a sudden, the first Blue runner starts and the Second Master Maps are still in the boot of my car.

Apologies to anyone (everyone?) who finished with wet feet, recent weather conditions had left a lot of standing water and altered the state of the dry gullies.

Many orienteers new to Normanby turned up for the night event, giving positive comments about the courses and area.  Thank you and we hope to see you again (in daylight maybe?).

Congratulations to the Hull University students who took part in both the night and day events although they claimed they only came back on Sunday to find a compass and an earthwall, both of which were successfully found.

Thanks to the HALO team for ensuring everything ran smoothly on the day (especially Mike and Dorothy) and also to the staff of the Country Park for their assistance.

Controller’s comments

Normanby is a deceptively intricate area in which to orienteer – a fact which many commented on – thank you. Lulled by a false sense of security in the Park, with its interesting additional features – deer, peacocks, ducks, statues ……. and on Sunday elves, Father Christmas and steam trains – you find yourself in the ‘sand dunes’, a small but notoriously complex area improving every year with new tree planting and growth. Despite limitations of crossing points, Neil designed challenging longer courses and interesting routes for the easier courses. Paths in the Park can be tricky due to leaf fall – I hope those on White were reassured by the extra tapes and enjoyed their legs through the trees.

Please note, it is helpful for the person preparing results if you declare any accidental mispunching: I had some detective work to do in order to prevent more disqualifications.

A note from Mike the Organiser, would those who are helping please arrive in plenty of time so they can be prepared and ready in ample time.

The facilities at our disposal were second to none and set new standards for ‘O’ events. Thanks to Wendy and Ian – the Rangers – for their support and flexibility during planning and at the weekend. In the new year, the Permanent course will be renovated and new Map Packs made available for those of you who might wish to return in the summer. New buildings will house the Information centre, a new children’s playground is planned and restaurant facilities will be developed in the Courtyard.

Colour badges are available for anyone coming above the colour standard three times on Yellow courses and above; pairs may qualify on White and Yellow courses. Please supply details of the qualifying events and a stamped addressed envelope to Dorothy Smith and your badge will be supplied.
