Planners Report

Normanby does have its drawbacks - the narrow western side of the park, the limited sites in the Deer Park, plus its small total size inevitably meaning a ‘second time around’ on the longer courses.

I attempted to minimise familiarity by changes of direction and also operated a policy which at one time was considered wrong – different courses entering controls from different directions.

Of course, the southern area outside the park (the old Bagmoor sand quarry) needed no such concessions. I cannot think of another orienteering area like it, with small detached copses, rough semi-open areas and a varied topography on a micro-scale.

My intentions here were to offer route choice by planning for legs across the grain of the paths and mixing long and short legs. Add this to brief dashes through open areas and then into the testing rhododendrons near the Start and I hope courses were planned which kept you on your toes.

The mapping of Bagmoor is accurate, though an equestrian ‘cross-country’ event the Sunday before did introduce some ‘extra’ paths.

In discussions with competitors after our event, a number suggested a problem area of the map – funnily enough all different! Usually they agreed in the end that non-appreciation of the scale (1;7500) and running too quickly in a very technical area were the overall reason for them inaccurately locating controls.

Controller’s Comments

Congratulations to all the Juniors who took part in the Yvette Baker Trophy. Some very good times were recorded on all Courses despite the perhaps unexpected technicality which was encountered at the Southern end of the Park, and indicating that Courses which may have appeared to be over long, were in fact Planned to the appropriate lengths for the area

We were fortunate that the summer weather continued in view of the large number of Marshals who were necessary to ensure the security of equipment in this area. A huge thank-you to all who undertook this task and especially for the assistance from friends in LOG and SYO too [and DVO and SWOC]

Thanks to the Organiser  for enlisting everyone’s help, to our SI  team who become ever more proficient and to Malcolm who mastered the Program to produce YB Trophy Results as they came in and provided extra interest to the teams to see how they were progressing during the event
