Primrose Warren

Sunday 17th April 2005

It seemed an ideal time to use Primrose for an event. Vegetation was sprouting green and the primroses were at their best, but nettles were not very big and brambles were just about at their lowest. On top of that the weather was kind to us. The turnout was disappointing, especially on the easier courses, but those who came enjoyed themselves. Thanks to all helpers – there were plenty of willing volunteers in the end who carried out their tasks expertly. Thanks especially to Kim who was learning to be an organiser and took quite a bit of the work off me. She only gets one lesson and so she will be on her own next time!
Mike Cope – organiser.

Neil's courses were praised by those I met after their runs. He had chosen some new sites and provided legs requiring compass work and route choice. At the same time he managed to find the most runnable bits of the wood. 105 on the White Course was missing at the beginning of the race, but thanks to Ann (hawkeye) O'Grady, (100points Compass Sport Lady), it was retrieved from 20 feet up a tree by Olympic hammer thrower Harvatt. I had a nervous moment at about 10 am when the 'stations' would not bleep to me when I dibbed (it is a scout camp after all). I started to bring the stations in to be reprogrammed until I realised that my SI Card was full, and complaining by keeping silent. I failed to clear last week's event before dibbing 40 odd controls on the day.
There was an accident which could have been very serious but fortunately only limited damage was done. A competitor’s thigh was impaled near the pond, by what we believe may have once been a fishing rod support. It was a 2 metre rusty metal rod with a 'T' piece handle affair on one end. It was well hidden in undergrowth. How he managed to complete the course is a mystery. He seems to be OK, but he will rest from running for a few weeks. We hope to see him back soon.
Hope you all enjoyed the pre-marked courses. Congratulations to all finishers on an unexpectedly fast day.
Brian Slater – controller.
