Description | This is a new area for us and has not been mapped to the usual standard, we are using an Open Orienteer Map.
Wold and Derringham are mainly populated by mid 1930s terraces, with a few more modern infills spaced around the area and to the south in the Acre Heads area. There is a 1960s estate in the northern part of the area which we may visit.
The Hull area and parts of the south bank are almost unique in making use of what are known locally as “tenfoots”. These may, or may not be ten foot wide alleyways and are there to provide access to the rear of gardens. Garages have been built along both sides of these tenfoots, in many cases, as they are usually wide enough for vehicular access. They are definitely wider than “snickets,” “rackets”, “wynds” etc. These tenfoots are almost always unlit.
The Wold and Derringham estates have a plethora of these tenfoots. One problem with the Open Orienteer Maps is that there is no distinction on the map as to what is a road and what is a tenfoot. So any orienteer going round this area at night will definitely have to stay in close contact with the map or there could be a degree of head scratching going on.
Snickets and pathways on Open Orienteer Maps do have their own symbol and there are several of these to add to the mix. As is usual with these maps not all of the snickets will be on the original map; I shall find what I can, but there are no guarantees that I will find them all.

We will be taking measures to make this event, and all our events as Covid safe as we can.
The course involves crossing several busy roads, in particular a 40mph busy dual carriageway as you cross from Wold to Derringham and back. Extreme care will need to be taken when making these crossings. As such, this course is not suitable for unaccompanied Under 16s. As this is a Score Event it is not practical to make used of timed out crossings.
Hi Viz will be required and a pen/pencil
