Description | White, Yellow, Orange and a Technical Course. Fees £2 adults, £1 juniors - pay one fee and attempt as many courses as you are able. Starts from 10am to 12 noon. Coaching available. Starts and Finish from in front of the Pavilion Cafe. Second round of the 2012 HALO Saturday League. Directions The only vehicular entrance to East Park is on Holderness Road. If travelling from the west of Hull, follow the A63 through the city and over the River Hull (you’ll see the tidal barrier on your right). Go straight on at the next roundabout and then leave the A63 via slip road signposted Bridlington A165. You will pass a KFC and ASDA on your right, then turn right onto Holderness Road (still signposted to Bridlington). The entrance to East Park is approximately 1km on your left, just after the start to the dual carriageway. (Grid reference TA 121 308). Parking There are three parking areas as well as road side parking. The nearest parking area is to the right once you have entered the park, just follow the road around. Please be aware there may be competitors crossing roads as you arrive and/or depart. The registration area will be on grass in front of the Pavilion café. Toilets are available in the Pavilion Café. East Park information East Park opened in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. At 130 acres, this Grade II listed park is the largest in Hull. It supports many facilities including a free mini zoo, a boating lake (no boats in January), a model yacht pond, a café (Open in January), children’s play areas, garden areas and tree lined avenues. The complexity of recently planted shrubbery and the size of the park should provide a suitable Orienteering challenge. Bring all the family – there is plenty to do and see. |

Report | Strong Turnout for New Event There was a terrific turn out on a cold but sunny morning for the first Orienteering event in recent years at Hull's largest park. HALO (Humberside and Lincolnshire Orienteers) had organised an introductory event at East Park. Over 50 individuals and groups took part and with many of the groups being family groups there were nearly 80 people overall. Most parts of the park were included in the various courses, taking the participants around the Boating Lake, Gardens, Open Spaces, Wildlife area and children’s play areas, all features of the park that make it so popular. Many of the newcomers enjoyed themselves so much that they came back for more and after completing the introductory course went on to try the harder courses. Neil Harvatt, the event organiser, put the good turn out down to publicity in local press and web-sites, a wide circulation of information around local schools as well as support from Hull City Council. Predictably the winning times came from experienced Orienteers; however there were many impressive times from newcomers. Performance of the day goes to Bella Brittain who only started Orienteering in September. Bella, who attends the weekly Club Nights in Beverley, had the fastest times on both the White and Yellow courses. However one of the beauties of Orienteering is that for many, speed is not important. Being able to visit different areas and to successfully navigate around a course is all the incentive that is needed. |
