Report | Mark Bough, in his first venture as planner, provided four good and interesting courses, which were enjoyed by all participants. Despite the miserable weather in the morning, there was a pretty good turnout, which was rewarded with improving weather conditions as the afternoon developed, finishing in bright autumn sunshine – though a little windy. The White and Yellow courses turned out to be a battle of the wheels, there were bicycles, pushchairs and wheel chairs (one electric one manual). Peter Roberts’s powered vehicle gave him the advantage on Yellow, whilst baby Sam conquered the White course in his push chair, assisted by Dad! A clean sweep for the Littles with Mum Kate, making a welcome return to Orienteering, posting the fastest time on the Orange course. York University student Alex sped round the Technical course assisted by the pacing advice provided by the local youths! This left Stuart Whittingham with two creditable second places. Special mention to Liz Grundley from NOC who started all four courses in her wheel chair, only to be thwarted by time limitations on the Technical course. We were surprised to learn that the Park gates are locked at 4pm at this time of year, and it was thanks to Mark, Mary and Paul who got there early to get the courses set up allowing earlier starts. Thanks also to Stuart and John who helped them collect the controls in at the end. The earlier starts allowed the Drewery family to take part before going on to the KC Stadium to watch Hull City wallop Middlesboro. Both Adam and James did very well completing the Orange and Technical courses respectively. It was good to see a number of non-members taking part, most who have been to similar local events. Now is a good time to become a member as anyone joining between now and the end of the year will get the rest of this year free. See article (Special membership offer) on the Home page of the web-site. |
